Integrate World Bank Indicators V2 without inventing release history

Interpret the response envelope, annual periods, country metadata, null observations and retrieval-based availability in a bounded adapter.

Investment Research APIs · 16 October 2026 · Reference edition 1

World Bank Indicators V2 supplies useful indicator observations, but a current response does not by itself provide each observation’s historical release timestamp. The fixture adapter preserves annual periods and uses retrieval-based availability evidence.

Use the documented V2 route

World Bank’s Indicators API documentation identifies V2 as replacing V1 and states that API keys are not required for access. The basic-call documentation explains output-format and pagination parameters. These access facts do not establish unlimited request volume, guaranteed uptime or unrestricted rights for every dataset.

Pin the source, indicator, country selection, period range and output format. Country API metadata can distinguish individual economies from aggregates. If an analysis requests all countries, do not assume every returned code represents an independently counted sovereign economy; explicitly define the intended analysis universe before summing or ranking observations.

Read the envelope before reading values

The synthetic World Bank-shaped fixture contains response metadata and a record collection. Validate both. A parser that immediately iterates the outer array as if every element were an observation can mistake metadata for data or silently drop records when the response is an error shape.

For an invented two-record response, one country-year has value 12.5 and another has null. The normalized output should retain both eligible identities and their distinct value states. A count of two records is not the same as two observed numerical values. Export coverage information so downstream users can tell the difference.

Preserve annual meaning

For the annual fixture, an original year 2024 becomes observation_period 2024 and period_kind annual. The normalized observation_date is 2024-12-31 solely as a documented period key. It is not a release date or a daily measurement and must not be used as evidence that the value was known by year end.

The response’s lastupdated metadata is retained as source context, not assigned as an exact release time for every country-year. With no observation-specific release evidence in this mapping, availability_basis is retrieval_time. A synthetic record retrieved in April 2026 therefore supports a retained April snapshot, not a claim about what a researcher knew in January 2025.

Treat query options as analytical choices

Indicator queries and metadata help identify the measure’s source and definition. Query choices that select recent non-empty values or fill gaps can change which periods appear. A complete historical panel and a latest-available comparison are different products and should have different request manifests.

A synthetic comparison illustrates the issue: country A has value 20 for 2024, while country B’s latest non-null value is 18 for 2022. Displaying both under a 2024 heading creates a false contemporaneous comparison. Preserve each original period and state whether the analysis accepts mixed-year observations or requires a common-year sample.

Retain rights and historical limits

The WDI catalog reviewed for this publication labels that dataset CC BY 4.0, while World Bank’s summary terms note metadata-specific exceptions and attribution duties. Check the exact indicator and dataset rather than inferring rights from unauthenticated access. The legacy full dataset-terms link currently redirects to general terms; the rights guide records that retrieval gap.

The fixtures contain invented values and demonstrate a narrow annual mapping. They do not assert historical revision completeness, current country coverage or a live World Bank connection. Before operational use, reconcile all pages, retain source metadata and obtain any missing permissions or release evidence required by the intended output. An honest retrieval-based snapshot is more useful than a falsely precise historical-availability claim.

Keep in the decision record

  • Preserve annual periods and country-versus-aggregate identity.
  • Do not treat lastupdated as each observation’s release timestamp.
  • Check dataset and indicator rights independently of API authentication.
