Evaluate an integration with adversarial fixtures and explicit release gates
Create a testable acceptance pack for schemas, time semantics, failure handling, rights and deployment without treating a demo as a production service.
An integration is ready for a particular use only when its contract, transformations, failure behavior and evidence match that use. A successful sample request or attractive dashboard is too narrow an acceptance criterion.
Define the supported boundary first
State the provider interface version, response shape, selected concepts, units, period kinds and availability bases. Identify unsupported cases before writing tests. For this publication, the boundary is offline synthetic FRED V1 observations, World Bank V2 annual records and bounded SEC instant facts normalized into an explicit shared contract.
The acceptance pack should distinguish parser behavior from network collection and production operation. A fixture-only adapter can be complete as a technical demonstration while leaving live authentication, rate coordination, durable scheduling and actual source-data rights outside its demonstrated scope. That is a useful boundary when it is clearly stated.
Test meaning as well as structure
JSON Schema helps test required fields and types, but the test pack must also verify units, dates, period conventions and revision identity. A synthetic record with number 4.5 can be structurally valid while carrying the wrong percent-versus-fraction interpretation. A valid date can still be the wrong clock for a historical cutoff.
Use independent expected results. For a synthetic panel with values 10, null and 20, expect two observed values and mean 15 under the declared no-imputation policy. For an annual World Bank fixture, expect the original year to survive beside its December 31 period key. These checks catch semantic errors that schema validation alone cannot detect.
Exercise failure and ambiguity deliberately
Include malformed numeric text, impossible dates, missing required identity, duplicate revisions, same-day conflicting accessions, partial pagination and provider error envelopes. Each fixture needs an expected status and explanation. A test suite that contains only valid examples demonstrates compatibility with those examples, not robust handling of plausible failures.
For a cutoff test, provide an observation before the cutoff, one after it and one on the same day with only date precision. The ambiguous item must follow a declared policy. Do not declare the whole integration point-in-time correct because the earlier and later cases pass; the boundary case is often the one that matters.
Reconcile artifacts and interfaces
Verify that browser results, downloads and command-line sample outputs use the same schema and mapping version. Parse exported JSON and CSV, compare record counts and confirm that source_record and availability_basis survive where promised. A visually correct table can still export a different dataset.
Run desktop and mobile interactions that exercise valid and invalid inputs, reset behavior and accessible error messages. Ensure fixture mode is visible. If the interface does not make live calls, its status labels must not imply a connection to FRED, World Bank or SEC. Technical honesty is part of functional correctness.
Promote only the capability evidenced
Before a real collector is released, separately verify authorized access, provider policy, data rights, managed-cloud execution, durable state and recovery. The production path must function without a personal computer or an open editor. Retain a cloud execution receipt and read back the accepted output rather than relying on a local success log.
The publication’s release gate concerns a substantial, working integration reference with lawful synthetic fixtures and accurate documentation. It does not certify investment signals, provider uptime or an unverified commercial API. Record unresolved actions with exact missing evidence and preserve the useful sample even when a broader operational use remains unsupported.
Keep in the decision record
- Test semantic boundaries and failures, not only valid JSON.
- Keep fixture-tested and operational capabilities distinct.
- Release claims must match the exact evidence retained.
Source notes
Primary specifications support the interface descriptions. All downloadable response fixtures are synthetic. Access and rights checks are dated in the source inventory.
Continue the analysis
Version the meaning of a schema, not only its field names
Classify integration changes by their effect on consumers and test migrations against preserved fixtures and semantic expectations.
Compare provider interfaces by the evidence they actually expose
Use a technical fit matrix for history, identity, timing, errors and rights instead of ranking APIs by a single speed or field-count score.
Package an integration result with a reproducible provenance manifest
Connect raw evidence, normalization, selected revisions and published outputs without exposing credentials or mistaking file hashes for truth.
